In an interview with the Source magazine last week, I spoke about the Yella Beezy trial and the media's role in the perception of this case and hip hop, in general. Today, Theodore Thomas, a key witness for the prosecutors claimed he lied in grand jury testimony. The defense attorney for Beezy, whose real name … Continue reading Yella Beezy’s Murder For Hire Trial Raises Some Questions

My upcoming book, The People Vs. Hip Hop, is now scheduled for an August 3, 2027 release. The pre-order link went up a couple of months ago, but I haven't posted it to my social media accounts because we were finalizing the cover. I am excited to announce that the cover will drop pretty soon. … Continue reading The People Vs. Hip Hop
When Was Hip Hop Created? Well, It’s Debatable
Check out my article for Smithsonian magazine on Kool Herc and the Back to School Party back in 1973, which many credit as the birth date of Hip Hop. I got a few DMs and messages from folks who felt passionate enough to reach out and object to who, where and when Hip Hop was … Continue reading When Was Hip Hop Created? Well, It’s Debatable

NPR Louder Than A Riot Interview: My Story Unveiled
https://youtu.be/G_2_UqH97wc?si=pCd9EzUOOW8Sk_F0 A few years ago, NPR's "Louder Than A Riot" podcast approached me about doing an interview for their season focused on misogynoir. Because I was familiar with their work and respected their journalism, I agreed to do the interview. They conducted two or three interviews at their offices, reached out to a few of … Continue reading NPR Louder Than A Riot Interview: My Story Unveiled

Reality Revisited: “The Cast of Hustle In Brooklyn” Reunites
Reality television stirs emotions, even two years later. What is it about a camera and revealing your truth that gets so complicated. What is it about our interaction with each other that changes when the camera light is on?
While in quarantine, I asked the cast of "Hustle In Brooklyn," some of who I still speak to, to participate in a 'zoom reunion' of sorts, because I was 1. learning how to use zoom and 2. curious to see where they all were and how the experience of reality TV had affected them and their relationship with each other. Needless to say, I got more than what I expected. I chose to wait to post this because, not long after we recorded this, the world was rocked by police brutality and it seemed the wrong time to post anything other than support for the cause.
Still, I did not want the time put into this (some of the cast refused to call in...while others simply forgot) to go unnoticed.
To Be Or Not To Be…A Momager (MadameNoire)
I’ve been toying with the idea of becoming a momager. Yes, I know we all manage our kids lives, but I’m talking about a real momager. I mean, a legitimate, income-generating, business mom type of momager. Think Kris Jenner (Kardashians), Sonia Norwood (Brandy), Tina Douglas (Ashanti), Mandy Cornett (Selena Gomez), or Matthew Knowles (Beyoncé) and Joe … Continue reading To Be Or Not To Be…A Momager (MadameNoire)
